Hormones

Is there a way to balance hormones naturally? Yes! There is!

The most obvious way to balance hormones naturally and control cortisol is to reduce stress. That’s easier said than done for most of us. You can’t just press an “OFF” button on your life! But there are changes that can help. Wait before you say to me “but you don’t understand how busy my life is,” consider these ideas to balance hormones naturally:

  • Learn to say NO. It’s a complete sentence. I know this is hard but do it and feel the freedom.
  • Sometimes “good enough” is good enough. Be willing to accept imperfection. Like rearranging the dishwasher because your way is better.
  • Get regular exercise…but not too close to bedtime. This will keep you from sleeping.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Both elevate cortisol levels. Alcohol also increases estrogen levels, which may worsen imbalances with progesterone. That occasional glass is fine.
  • Unplug at least an hour before bedtime. Screen light interferes with melatonin production.
  • Try a magnesium supplement before bed. Magnesium is a calming mineral. I like magnesium glycinate because it’s least likely to cause diarrhea. Just FYI.

I told my mom to try melatonin and she bought some at the local drug store and then told me it keeps her up. When I looked at the ingredients it contained an antihistamine. Buy pure melatonin. Be very careful of the sleeping aids as these do not treat the root cause of insomnia and if you are susceptible to addiction you can come dependent. And over time, they work less effectively…which means you need higher and higher doses to do the job. I don’t recommend this approach. Get to the bottom of the problem. There is so much help other there and so many natural options. This also affects the hormones. Essential oils that helpful are Lavender, Serenity, Breathe, and Cedarwood.

There are supplements that can help to balance hormones naturally and to help with controlling cortisol. However, it’s best to target these to your specific imbalance. I personally am balancing the hormones 8+ years post menopause naturally and I am working with a fabulous integrative practitioner. Minor adjustments that keep the body balanced and me in a happy zone!
